Controversy
As I'm sure we all know by now, thanks to our friends at Gawker, Overheard in New York has either lost or fired its editor Michael Malice, who has gone on to start the virtually indistinguishable New York Overheard (except for all that missing archival content). Rumors abound as to reasons for the split, but it is nonetheless a split as acrimonious and permanent as the Hatfields and the McCoys. Malice begins Overheard at College as soon as he can line up tech support, apparently.
In other blogginews, of course, cannibals blog too. Does this mean we should add a new category - and if so, should it go under "Personal Blogs" or "Society Blogs"?

Blogging News
Try to look up the number of blogs on the Internet, and you'll quickly find that the statistics vary widely: anywhere from 2 million to over 60 million, depending on who's counting. Blogging is a cross between diary-writing and guerilla journalism, which makes tracking them an exercise in patience.
While it's easy to find a particular blog, browsing is much more difficult. Although categorization schemas exist, most possess only top-level categories -- in other words, unless you have only a VERY vague idea of what you're looking for, browsing through such sites is not much easier than browsing through a basic search engine.
The idea behind Bloggapedia is a simple one: to provide a three-level category structure, as specific as necessary, to allow people to find exactly what they're looking for when they search for blogs. Bloggers can add and categorize their own blogs, and visitors can suggest blogs for categorization. We provide forums to network with other bloggers, tools and resources for blogging, and, of course, our own Bloggapedia blog. There's a search function to allow visitors to find a specific blog, and even rate it.
We began by categorizing 1000 blogs -- a drop in a bucket, but you've got to start somewhere, right? Emails were then sent out to these bloggers announcing the birth of Bloggapedia, and inviting them to view their listings on the site (and make any corrections or additions they thought necessary). The number of users on Bloggapedia is rising every hour; we're currently up to 220 users, and that number will probably be outdated by the time this entry is posted. Not bad at all, considering that we're less than a week old at this point.
So we'd like to give out a big Thank You! to everyone who is helping to make Bloggapedia a success. Each and every person who comes to this site is valued, and we look forward to many successful years ahead!

That prison blogs are possible
When we get our email box down to 400 messages and we feel so clean
Blogs written by sock monkeys (even if they desperately need updating)

Plucking at Pluck

Blogging News
Pluck is a "social media solution" provider in Austin Texas - who today launched a blog-aggregation program called BlogBurst, that collects and ships blog content to online newspapers. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out - another content provider, Newstex, has been doing the same thing since January, although the target market's a bit different. Newstex supplies the financial, government, and entertainment sectors with news and commentary; Pluck seems to be targeting only newspapers so far. One question that occurs to us is where the blog content will be located on any given newspaper's website, and what will it look like? Pluck gives an example of an individual post, but there's nothing like seeing it in action.
